Job Description:

The School of Public Policy (SPP) in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, social scientist with research and teaching in Cybersecurity and Public Policy. Areas of specialization related to cybersecurity might include privacy, security, surveillance, data science, data analytics, and computational social science. Areas of specialization related to public policy include, but are not limited to, domestic or international policy, Internet policy, regulation, ethics or related policy domains. The successful candidate will hold a tenure-track, joint position with the tenure home in one of the social science departments in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (for a list of departments, see and with teaching and service duties in the department and in the School of Public Policy. Preference will be given to candidates with the capacity to develop: (1) independent and collaborative research programs that, in part, meet the research needs of international, federal, state, or non-governmental organizations and that have the potential to attract external research funding; (2) interdisciplinary collaborations — especially with the UMass Cybersecurity Institute and, potentially, with the Computational Social Science Institute and the Center for Data Science; and, (3) innovative teaching that incorporates new approaches in teaching and learning. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in SPP’s Masters of Public Policy and Administration program, SPP’s emerging undergraduate public policy program, and graduate and undergraduate courses in the tenure home social science department.


Candidates for the position must meet the following requirements: • A doctoral degree in a social science discipline. Candidates must have a PhD in hand by August 2017. • Experience and qualifications appropriate to an appointment at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. • Previous teaching experience at a university level is highly desirable.
