Cybersecurity and Public Policy Faculty
(tenure-track, Assistant or Associate Level, academic year)
Joint appointment: School of Public Policy and open department within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
About the University of Massachusetts Amherst:
The University of Massachusetts Amherst is one of the major public research universities in America. Nestled in idyllic Amherst, Massachusetts, the campus is consistently ranked among the top public research universities in the nation, and offers a rich cultural environment in a rural setting close to major urban centers.
The School of Public Policy (SPP) in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, social scientist with research and teaching in Cybersecurity and Public Policy. Areas of specialization related to cybersecurity might include privacy, security, surveillance, data science, data analytics, and computational social science. Areas of specialization related to public policy include, but are not limited to, domestic or international policy, Internet policy, regulation, ethics or related policy domains. The successful candidate will hold a tenure-track, joint position with the tenure home in one of the social science departments in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (for a list of departments, see https://www.umass.edu/sbs) and with teaching and service duties in the department and in the School of Public Policy. Preference will be given to candidates with the capacity to develop: (1) independent and collaborative research programs that, in part, meet the research needs of international, federal, state, or non-governmental organizations and that have the potential to attract external research funding; (2) interdisciplinary collaborations — especially with the UMass Cybersecurity Institute and, potentially, with the Computational Social Science Institute and the Center for Data Science; and, (3) innovative teaching that incorporates new approaches in teaching and learning. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in SPP’s Masters of Public Policy and Administration program, SPP’s emerging undergraduate public policy program, and graduate and undergraduate courses in the tenure home social science department.
Candidates for the position must meet the following requirements: • A doctoral degree in a social science discipline. Candidates must have a PhD in hand by August 2017. • Experience and qualifications appropriate to an appointment at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. • Previous teaching experience at a university level is highly desirable.
The university is committed to active recruitment of a diverse faculty and student body. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members. Because broad diversity is essential to an inclusive climate and critical to the University’s goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will holistically assess the many qualifications of each applicant and favorably consider an individual’s record working with students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. We will also favorably consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic degree and career.
Applicants should submit the following by applying only through the online UMass Interview Exchange portal: (1) a cover letter describing areas of research interest and teaching experience; (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a sample of written work, and (4) three letters from academic references. http://umass.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=75828 Applicants should apply by the priority deadline of 15 October 2016 in order to ensure consideration.
