The Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana, an Historically Black Catholic University located in the heart of New Orleans, invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2017. Applicants should have a PhD in sociology, though ABDs will be considered. The successful candidate for the position will have primary teaching and research specializations in criminology/deviance. Secondary specializations include race and ethnicity, urban and community sociology, gender, and/or family. Successful candidates will demonstrate an eagerness and readiness to support the development of a departmental concentration in “Crime and Social Justice” as well as other programmatic innovation and collaboration across disciplines.
The sociology program actively supports Xavier’s mission of promoting a more just and humane society through service-learning projects and community-based research collaborations. In addition to New Orleans’ vibrant culture and dynamic urban revitalization, Xavier’s location provides a rich and fertile research environment with ample opportunities for community engagement, teaching innovation, and research collaborations. Faculty in Xavier’s Department of Sociology enjoy the intimacy of teaching small classes and working closely with individual students, while being affiliated with a larger Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Xavier faculty strive for teaching excellence and innovative research through funding and support from a wide range of institutional programs such as Xavier’s Center for Undergraduate Research, an undergraduate research journal, interdisciplinary programming, the nation’s only Institute for Black Catholic Studies, and the Center for Advancement of Teaching and Faculty Development. Faculty members have opportunities to teach courses in African American and Diaspora Studies and/or Women’s Studies.
