The Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head, the appointment to be effective August 1, 2017. The Head is expected to provide effective administrative and intellectual leadership for the department, to have a strong commitment to the department’s undergraduate mission, to support the faculty in their work as teachers and researchers, to supervise further development of the undergraduate and graduate programs and research opportunities, and to establish strong ties between the department and university and community initiatives. Candidates must have a PhD in Sociology and a record of scholarship appropriate to an appointment at the rank of Professor, strong scholarly credentials in research and teaching, an interest in both graduate and undergraduate education, and the leadership skills to further the department’s research, teaching, and service goals. Previous administrative experience is desirable. The department welcomes applications from individuals pursuing research in any area of Sociology. The Department of Sociology ( is one of 19 departments in the College of Arts & Sciences and has approximately 485 undergraduate majors and 32 Master’s students. We pride ourselves in attracting an especially diverse population of students. The Sociology Department has 12 full-time tenured/tenure -track faculty, the equivalent of 6 fulltime instructors, and one full time administrative assistant. The department, which has grown substantially in recent years, offers the BA and MA in Sociology, with an optional criminology concentration at each level. UNC Greensboro, one of 16 campuses in the University of North Carolina system, is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a research university with high research activity. Enrollment is approximately 19,700 students, including 4,000 graduate students, in the College and six professional schools. Greensboro is a city of about 277,000 in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, a location providing easy access to the Research Triangle and to recreational opportunities at the coast and the mountains. The local metropolitan area (which includes the cities of High Point and Winston-Salem) has a population of approximately 1.6 million and enjoys an excellent quality of life.
