The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Western Carolina University invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology position to begin August 1, 2024. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in medical sociology. They will contribute to the university’s Sociology program, the Integrated Health Sciences program, and the Liberal Studies Program by teaching SOC 456: Medical Sociology and SOC 103: Human Society or SOC 235: Social Problems. The position has a 3-3 teaching load. The department emphasizes student and community engagement alongside a well-defined, active scholarly agenda. Additionally, the department seeks to provide a place where all people feel they have worth and influence and can be actively engaged in supporting and extending our community-centered values.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Sociology in hand at the start of the appointment, but ABDs will be considered during application review and the interview process. Preferred candidates will have experience teaching courses related to medicine and health.
