Job Summary	The Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for a tenure-track entry-level/early career Assistant Professor position with a research focus in Crime & Social Justice, or Health, Medicine & Society, to start in August 2023. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have a vision for involving undergraduate students in externally funded research projects, and success in community partnering or experience working in social or public policy. A Ph.D. in Sociology before August 2023 is required. Candidates who will contribute to the university’s mission and align with college curricula preparing students to advance social justice are desirable. The candidate should be prepared to teach a broad range of courses and to utilize quantitative methods to investigate causes, consequences, and/or policies associated with varied forms of social inequalities. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research and be able to support HBCU students through advising and mentorship. The successful candidate will teach four courses each semester which may include interdisciplinary courses in Xavier’s core curriculum, in the African American and Diaspora Studies program, and/or in the Women’s Studies program. Summer school teaching opportunities are available but not required for this position. The department is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates between members of different demographic groups. Duties: Teach undergraduate courses each year with an emphasis on theory and topical courses that coordinate with our concentrations in Crime & Social Justice and Health, Medicine & Society. Teach primarily face-to-face but mode of instruction may also include hybrid, remote, and/or any combination thereof. Advise and mentor undergraduate students. Establish a record of research productivity, proportional to experience, in an area mentioned above. Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community.
Minimum Qualifications	PhD in Sociology (conferred by the time of appointment). Strong commitment to teaching a fulltime load of 4/4 courseload per academic year which may include interdisciplinary courses in the African American and Diaspora Studies program, and/or in women’s studies program. Demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. Conduct ongoing, independent research resulting in scholarly publications. Demonstrate the ability and willingness to work collegially. Actively engaged in meaningful scholarly activities with and/or about diverse populations. Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.
Preferred Qualifications	Successful experience teaching undergraduate courses to a diverse student body. Demonstrate Quantitative Methods focus and familiarity with various software. Experience in mentoring and advising HBCU students leading to readiness for graduate school and the workforce. Awareness of pedagogical best practices and ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge in this area. Experience developing and offering experiential learning opportunities (e.g. undergraduate research, service learning, participatory action research). Develop and participate in an active research agenda and contribute to service activities for the department, university, and community.
