Job Summary 
The School of Social Science and Global Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor or Instructor of Sociology to join our active and collegial sociology program starting the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, permanent position with opportunities for promotion. A successful candidate who does not have a PhD by August 2024 will be hired as an instructor. The School is seeking candidates with a specialty in any area of sociology and with a commitment to excellent teaching. Candidates will be expected to teach introductory classes and a variety of upper-level sociology electives. The School strongly values and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and scholarship. Applicants with experience teaching and mentoring in a university setting with a diverse student body will receive preference. Applicants with experience teaching and designing online courses, or with at least a willingness to do so, will also receive preference.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach four courses per semester, fall and spring.
  2. Hold regular office hours.
  3. Mentor and advise students in the program.
  4. Attend faculty meetings as determined by the Director of the School of Social Science and Global Studies.
  5. Engage in professional development and/or scholarly activities appropriate to the mission of the School, College and University.
  6. Provide service to assist the functioning of the School, College, and University.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Sociology.
Preferred Qualifications  
PhD or ABD in Sociology conferred by August 2024 with a record of high-quality teaching.
