Visiting Assistant Professor Sociology, Trinity University

The Department of Sociology invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant professor position. Candidates preferred to have a Ph.D. in Sociology by August 1, 2023, though ABD candidates will also be considered. The teaching responsibility is 3/3 at the undergraduate level. The candidate will be expected to teach 2 sections of a lower-division course (Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Deviance, Sociology of Gender, and/or Social Inequality) and an upper-division course of their choice in their area of specialization, in both Fall 2023 and Spring 2024. The department is open to any areas of specialization within Sociology, but is especially interested in areas that do not overlap with our existing strengths.

BACKGROUND

Trinity University (http://www.trinity.edu) is a secular, selective liberal arts college with small class sizes and significant instructional and research support. Trinity offers high-quality liberal arts, science, and pre-professional programs to approximately 2,400 undergraduate students from the U.S. and more than 45 other countries. The attractive campus overlooks downtown San Antonio, the seventh- largest city in the USA, whose population is approximately 65% Latinx, 7% Black/African American, 3% Asian, and 14% foreign-born.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Trinity consists of five sociologists, four anthropologists, and one urban geographer, with a variety of backgrounds and a wide range of research and teaching specialties. At Trinity, sociology takes a critical and in-depth look at the fundamental principles governing social organization and social behavior at the local, national, and global levels,with regard to topics such as social inequality, criminal justice, gender, race, public policy, and public health, making use of both quantitative and qualitative approaches to research. JOB DUTIES

  • The teaching responsibility is 3/3 at the undergraduate level. Instruction, except under exceptional circumstances (e.g., weather emergencies, COVID outbreaks, personal illness) will take place in-person on the Trinity campus.
  • The candidate will be expected to be able to teach 2 sections of a lower-division course (Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Deviance, Sociology of Gender, and/or Social Inequality) and an upper-division course of their choice in their area of specialization, in both Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.
  • The department is open to any areas of specialization within Sociology, but is especially interested in areas that do not overlap with our existing strengths.

APPOINTMENT DETAILS

This position will be a two- semester appointment beginning in August of 2023, and will be non- renewable.

EDUCATION
REQUIRED
Coursework completed and dissertation in progress in a doctoral program in Sociology (i.e., ABD status)

PREFERRED

Ph.D. in Sociology, completed by August 10, 2023

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Demonstrated teaching ability and enthusiasm for teaching at a selective undergraduate institution are essential.
  • Completion of all Ph.D. coursework in Sociology.
  • Successful sole-teaching of at least one undergraduate sociology course, as evidenced by a sample syllabus and teaching evaluations.

 

PREFERRED

● Completion of Ph.D. by August 10, 2023.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

● Work is completed in an office environment.
● May work under pressure to meet office/project deadlines. ● Instruction is expected to be in-person.

● In-person, on-campus teaching is required.
● Attendance of monthly department meetings is required.
