The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor (tenure-track) appointment in Criminology. The preferred start date is August 2025.
The WVU Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers B.A. programs in Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, and Women’s and Gender Studies and has over 700 majors. The Department also offers a PhD in Sociology, which includes specializations in four broad areas: crime, law and deviance; inequality, diversity, and equity; social psychology and group processes; and religion. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is home to many scholars who teach and conduct research in the broad area of social justice.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes that complement or enhance the Department’s current undergraduate and graduate offerings. The teaching load is typically two courses per semester. The candidate is expected to develop a program of teaching and research in the sociology of crime. Successful candidates will engage in graduate student mentorship; and complement or expand upon our Department’s existing strengths in the field of criminology.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, or a related field that reflects a sociology perspective. Candidates who are ABD, will be considered but must have degree in-hand before the start date. In addition, the candidate must have knowledge of graduate and undergraduate innovative teaching and learning techniques in criminology; demonstrated ability or potential to establish an externally funded research program in their criminological areas of expertise; demonstrated excellent teaching skills; ability to contribute to undergraduate student success initiatives and graduate advising; ability to develop new courses; excellent written and oral communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills.
