Job Summary
The Department of Sociology at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure track position in Sociology at the Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2026. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Sociology, expertise in criminology or deviance focused on social inequalities, and a secondary specialization in race and ethnicity, urban and community sociology, gender, or family. Experience in teaching, as well as a publication record in a specific field of research is preferable.

While the area of research is open, we have a preference for materials for Sociology-Crime and Social Justice research.

The Department of Sociology has four faculty members and over 90 students. The Department offers three types of undergraduate major programs including Sociology, Sociology-Crime and Social Justice and Sociology-Health, Medicine and Society. The Department faculty are proud of the quality of instruction, undergraduate research, instrumentation, and the accomplishments of their students.

Pýrgos Duties and Responsibilities:
Candidates should be committed to excellence and continual growth in teaching, to maintaining an active research program that involves undergraduates, and to offering support or leadership in service to the department, community, college, and university. Interested candidates should demonstrate a capacity and willingness to effectively manage a 4-4 teaching load, encompassing a variety of courses across all levels. In addition to the introductory course and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, a successful candidate should be prepared to teach courses required for sociology majors such as theory. The ideal candidate will contribute to the university’s mission to advance social justice through preparing students for leadership and service by establishing opportunities for undergraduate research, fostering community partnerships aligned with the mission and the curriculum, or offering leadership for engaging students in policy arenas adjacent to the “Crime and Social Justice” curriculum.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Sociology-Crime and Social Justice, or related field;
  • Strong commitment to teaching a full load of 24 credit hours per academic year;
  • Write and Speak English proficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with teaching, as well as a strong publication record in Sociology-crime and social justice, or related field.;
  • Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population;
  • Awareness of pedagogical best practices;
  • Record of meaningful mentorship of undergraduate students; and
  • Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.
Special Requirements Summary
Additional requirements include:

    • Contributing to the Crime and Social Justice program concentration via curriculum development and assessment, connecting students with experiential extra-curricular and/or research opportunities, and mentoring students according to their diverse goals;
    • Holding regular in-person office hours each week; and
    • Participating in service activities for the Department, the University, their discipline, and the community.
